The Lendal Tower simply must be the most incredible holiday accommodation in York. Built in 1299, during the reign of Edward I, it offers the oldest accommodation in the city, has the best views and, at the same time, is ultra-luxurious throughout, with all modern requirements for the 21st century. This magnificent holiday property, Grade 1 listed and scheduled as an Ancient Monument, was originally built as part of the City of York’s medieval defences to protect the city’s river entrance in times of war.

With three fantastic bedrooms, two of which are en-suite, a wonderfully comfortable living room, huge designer kitchen, dining room, garden and an incredible roof terrace offering 360 degree views across the city skyline, this has to be the place to stay for lasting memories.

Guests can stay for a three night weekend break beginning on a Friday, or a four night mid-week break beginning on a Monday, or luxuriate for an entire week arriving Friday or Monday and can book securely on-line. This historic and ancient three bedroom Lendal Tower is located at the main entrance to the city above the river. Built more than seven centuries ago, as part of the City’s defences, it offers one of the best locations and presents some of the best views in the city - only narrowly beaten by those offered by The Minster.

Through the imposing front door and into a beautiful hallway with a stunning limestone flagged floor, guests will step into an ancient world where the magnificent Medieval Tower merges wonderfully with the 21st century.

Spread over four floors, it is furnished to the highest of design standards and offers lots of space, quality and comfort, both inside and out, for up to six guests.

On the ground floor is a large warm and welcoming living room built into the round of the Tower. The ancient stone walls, the underfloor heating, the wooden beams and the plush furnishings make this a most cosy and relaxing space - an almost magical contradiction to its original use.

Up a couple of steps the living room leads to a lovely dining area with a huge oak table which can seat eight guests; and then another step up to the designer kitchen with everything a guest could need.

The double doors from the dining area lead to a beautiful and private large garden with furnishings for al fresco dining.

There is also a shower room at ground floor level.

An enclosed and ancient spiral staircase then leads to the bedroom floors. The first floor offers a beautiful mezzanine double bedroom overlooking the living room. The second floor leads to another plush and a huge king sized bedroom with an en-suite shower room and separate dressing room. The third floor, which is entirely wood panelled, offers a vast bedroom with four poster king sized bed and an en-suite area with luxurious copper roll-top bath. The views from the windows are magnificent and the furnishings throughout are superb. All bedrooms have additional seating and TVs.

Then, the cherry on the cake, take the ship style ladder onto the roof of The Lendal Tower and guests are greeted with the most incredible views across the city skyline and along the river. Watch the sun go down over the yard arm with a relaxing drink before heading out to one of the many restaurants nearby.

Additionally the property offers free garaged parking for two cars opposite the main door. Coming by train? The railway station is just a three minute walk away.

Probably the best location in the whole of the city. At the entrance to the city, overlooking the river and the city, just a three minute walk from the railway station off Museum Street. Easy access by car to the secure garage opposite The Lendal Tower doors. For a wedding party it is just 2 minutes from The Hospitium. Surrounded by shops, restaurants, delis, museums and just 2 minutes to The Minster.

Access & Departure

Guests are welcome to drop off luggage and park anytime from late morning.

The property will be ready for 3pm at the latest. If there are no guests leaving on the morning of arrival it may be available for earlier access by arrangement.

Departure is for 10am.

Guests will be personally welcomed on arrival.


Parking is on site for two vehicles.


Just a 3 minute walk to the station.

Are you open all year?

The Lendal Tower is open for bookings all year. Stays are for three night weekend breaks starting on a Friday, or four night mid-week breaks starting on a Monday, or luxuriate longer with a stay of one week arriving either on a Friday or a Monday. However, we can be flexible, so if you would like to arrive and depart on different days just email to enquire - our minimum is two nights.

How central is the property?


Is it noisy being so close to the city?

York is a bustling and busy city at any time of year as there is so much to see and do, and it is this show of life that makes York such an exciting place to stay. The Lendal Tower is well insulated so disturbances are very rare.

How accessible are you by train?

York is on the main rail routes between London and Scotland with trains running a few times an hour (2 hrs to London and 2.5 hrs to Edinburgh). We are also served very well with trains to the west and east, as well as Manchester Airport. The Tower is then just a three minute walk across the river. Call 08457 225 225 for fantastic deals on the Virgin East Coast Mainline, particularly first class tickets which, when booked in advance, can be cheaper than the standard price. Advance tickets can often be purchased cheaper than buying on the day.

If we travel by car where can we park?

There is free secure garaged parking on site for two vehicles.

How far are the nearest airports and what is easiest transport?

From Canada & the US many flights can come in to Manchester which is nearer than London. From here it is a direct train journey of approx. 2 hours to York. We can also provide details of a local chauffeur, who we and many other guests use, as this can work out almost as cheap as train fares when there are a few travelling, and certainly more convenient. If flying into Leeds/Bradford from Europe or on the London shuttle you will need to take a taxi to Leeds railway station for a train to York or use taxi/chauffeur all the way to York.

How can we book a break?

The availability calendars are always up to date so check first that the dates you want are available by clicking on the ‘availability’ or ‘search/book’ tabs.  Alternatively you can e-mail us on This email address is being protected from spambots. The balance will be due one month before arrival. If arriving within a month the full amount will be required upon booking. Payment can be made by card by using our secure on-line booking page. Just click on the ‘book' tab and follow the simple process to check availability, place your booking and to pay the deposit or full amount. We accept all credit and debit cards except Amex and please note we do not accept cheques, cash or bank transfers.

Bookings can be made on-line via this website, with no added charges, for stays of three nights from Friday - Monday, or four nights from Monday - Friday or seven nights arriving Friday or monday. To book a stay arriving or departing on a different day, or for a different length of stay, please email for a quote.  Our minium stay is two nights.

What happens when we have booked?

If booking on-line you will receive an immediate e-mail confirming your booking and the payment made. You will then receive a more detailed e-mail with further confirmation of your booking followed by information regarding access, directions, car-parking etc. If you have paid a deposit only, you will be sent a secure payment link approximately 5 weeks before your arrival so that your final payment can be made. Booking by phone will follow the same process.

How do we get the keys?

Arrangements will be made with you directly regarding access arrangements and meeting.

What time is check-in and check-out?

You can drop off luggage and park anytime from late morning by prior arrangement. Your accommodation will be ready for around 3pm and, if no-one is leaving that morning, it may be available earlier by arrangement. Check out is for 10am so that the property can be prepared thoroughly between guests.

Do we have to clean up when we leave?

No! Many self-catering properties ask you to do this or charge separately. Everything will be spotless when you arrive, and it is your host’s job to make sure the accommodation is spotless again for next guests. Obviously you are asked to respect the property and its contents, and to leave it in good order.

Do you accept children?

Yes we do. A travel cot and high chair can be provided. (Please bring own bedding for cot.)

Is this property suitable for wheelchair users?

Sorry but because the sleeping accommodation is up a spiral staircase this accommodation is designated as “not suitable for wheelchair users” or for anyone with walking difficulty.

Are there any restrictions?

There is strictly no smoking within the property. Also animals are not permitted. The property accommodates up to six people maximum, plus a baby in a cot.

Do you have any hidden charges?

No we don’t.  Only excessive use of the phone may be charged together with any replacement or repair costs for any damage during your stay.

What complimentary goodies do we get when we arrive?

A complimentary welcome hamper is provided for your arrival containing milk, tea, coffee and a range of Yorkshire produce including wine/beer.

Do you have computer access & what TV/entertainment do you have?

Free wi-fi is provided throughout. There is a 55” TV with blu-ray in the living room and in each bedroom there is a TV with DVD. A CD/radio sound system with blu tooth connectivity is also provided in the living room and a separate radio in the master bedroom.
