Through the apartment’s entrance hall the property opens up into a gorgeous open plan living-dining room with designer kitchen. There is a large corner sofa, wonderfully comfortable, and has dining for four guests. The modern kitchen is fully equipped and offers everything a guest could need.

Location

The Abbot’s Chambers is located near Monk Bar (ancient Medieval entrance gate to the city), opposite the Medieval city walls, just off St Maurice’s Road. The property is accessed via the building’s front garden and gate, through the secure entrance door and is located at ground floor level.

It is just a very short walk to The Minster with shops, restaurants, delis and more on the doorstep.

A parking permit for complimentary parking at nearby Monk Bar car park is provided on arrival. Luggage can be dropped off from immediately behind the building.

Access & Departure

Guests are welcome to drop off luggage from late morning (by prior arrangement). If departing guests are leaving on the morning of your arrival, the accommodation will be ready around 2.30pm. If we do not have prior guests leaving that morning then access can be earlier. Check out is normally for 10.30am, luggage may be stored until later. Guests will be personally welcomed on arrival.

Car-parking

A complementary permit is provided for one vehicle for use at Monk Bar car-park, less than five minutes’ walk away. This will be provided on arrival at the apartment.

Train

If arriving by train, The Abbot’s Chambers is about a 10-15 minute walk from the station. It would be a difficult walk with luggage over the cobbles though so it would be better to take a taxi, which will take approximately 5 minutes.

Booking and Arrival Information

Full details with directions, parking and access information will be sent as part of the booking confirmation.

Are you open all year?

Yes! Stays can be as short as 2 nights or as many as 30 nights. Guests can arrive any available day. Please note, however, we do not accept arrivals/departures on Xmas Eve, Xmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Eve or New Year's Day.

How central are the apartments?

Just three minutes’ walk from The Minster, opposite the lovely Medieval City Walls with shops, restaurants, museums and more to hand.

Is it noisy being in the centre of the city?

York is a bustling and busy city at any time of year as there is so much to see and do but it is rare for anyone to be disturbed by noise. Even The Minster bells are considerate and don’t ring at night!

Are we likely to feel hemmed in?

The Abbot’s Chambers is located at ground floor level in a small and exclusive building with lots of natural light flooding through all windows. The apartment is large, bright and airy so no-one should feel hemmed-in but should instead feel totally comfortable and relaxed.

How accessible are you by train?

York is on the main rail routes between London and Scotland with trains running a few times an hour (2 hrs to London and 2.5 hrs to Edinburgh). We are also served very well with trains to the west and east, as well as Manchester Airport. The apartment is just about 15 minutes’ walk from the station (although a bit too tricky with heavy suitcases over the cobbles), or a few minutes by taxi. Call 08457 225 225 for fantastic deals on the East Coast Mainline, particularly first class tickets which, when booked in advance, can be cheaper than the standard price. Advance tickets can often be purchased cheaper than buying on the day..

If we travel by car where can we park?

Complimentary parking permit for one vehicle is provided for use at the nearby car-park.

I understand York floods regularly, will we be affected?

Although the River Foss is just a couple of minutes walk away, it does not flood in this area.

How far are the nearest airports and what is easiest transport?

From Canada & the US many flights can come in to Manchester which is nearer than London. From here it is a direct train journey of approx. 2 hours to York. We can also provide details of a local chauffeur, who we and many other guests use, as this can work out almost as cheap as train fares when there are a few travelling, and certainly more convenient. If flying into Leeds/Bradford from Europe or on the London shuttle you will need to take a taxi to Leeds railway station for a train to York or use taxi/chauffeur all the way to York.

How can we book?

The availability calendars are always up to date so check first that the dates you want are available by clicking on the ‘availability/search’ or ‘book’ tabs. Alternatively you can e-mail us on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call us on 07746 552478 / 01904 623508.

If booking your break more than one month in advance you will be asked to pay a 40% deposit. The balance will be due one month before arrival. If arriving within the month the full amount will be required upon booking. Payment can be made by card by using our secure on-line booking page. Just click on the ‘book' tab and follow the simple process to check availability, place your booking and to pay the deposit or full amount. We accept all credit and debit cards except Amex, and please note we do not accept cheques, cash or bank transfers.

What happens when we have booked?

If booking on-line you will receive an immediate e-mail confirming your booking and the payment made. You will then receive a more detailed e-mail with further confirmation of your booking including information regarding access, directions, car-parking etc. If you have paid a deposit only, you will be sent a secure payment link approximately 5 weeks before your arrival so that your final payment can be made. Booking by phone will follow the same process.

How do we get the keys?

Arrangements will be made with you closer to the date to confirm arrival time so that your hosts can meet you to show you around and to hand over your two sets of keys.

What time is check-in and check-out?

You can drop off luggage anytime from late morning (and pick up your parking permit if required.) Your apartment will be ready for around 2.30pm and, if no-one is leaving that morning, it can be earlier by arrangement. Check out is before 10.30am so that the apartment can be prepared thoroughly between guests but again, guests may leave luggage for later collection, by arrangement.

Do we have to clean up when we leave?

No! Many self-catering properties ask you to do this or charge separately. Everything will be spotless when you arrive, and it is the owners' job to make sure the apartment is spotless again for next guests. Obviously you are asked to respect the property and its contents, and to leave it in good order.

Do you accept children?

Certainly. A cot and high chair can also be provided. There is a storeroom where a pushchair can be stored.

Is this property suitable for wheelchair users?

The property itself is at ground floor level, has no stairs and there is a walk-in shower (6” step). So it is marked as suitable for less mobile. NB There are two steps from the entrance garden to the building door at the front. There is easy access for wheelchair into the back garden area and then one step up into the building. If a wheelchair is required there is a storeroom in the back garden where it can be kept. We can advise on wheelchair hire etc if required.

Are there any restrictions?

There is strictly no smoking within the apartment or its building. If smoking in the garden you are asked to stand away from the windows of other properties. Also animals/pets are not permitted. The property accommodates up to four people - up to 3 adults max or two adults and two children. We also do not allow hen and stag parties, or similar, as the property is in a small and peaceful residential building.

Do you have any hidden charges?

No we don’t. Only excessive use of the phone may be charged (a phone is provided for emergency calls). Also any replacement or repair costs for damage during your stay. This forms part of our terms and conditions so you are advised to ensure your house insurance protects you against damage and you agree to pay any recompense within 4 weeks of departure.

What complimentary goodies do we get when we arrive?

A complimentary drink and delicious Yorkshire snacks from Betty’s Famous Tea Rooms are provided for your arrival. You will also find fresh flowers and ample tea, coffee (including de-caff.) milk, sugar and juice for the children. At an extra charge of £30 you can purchase champagne and chocolates.

Do you have computer access & what TV/entertainment do you have?

Complimentary wi-fi is provided throughout. There is Now TV and a DVD player in the living area. In each bedroom there is a wall mounted TV. A blu tooth sound system is also provided.
